In 1985, Mrs. Harris graduated from Hernando High School. She attended Northwest Community College from 1985-1987 where she was a flutist in the band and a member of Phi Theta Kappa; she graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree in 1987. Mrs. Harris transferred to the University of Mississippi in 1987 where she was a member of Phi Kappa Phi; she completed her education in 1989, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree focusing on library science, and later added certification to teach reading in the state of Mississippi. After marrying, Mrs. Harris pursued and completed a Master's of Library and Information Science Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi from 1995-1998.
Mrs. Harris began her library career as the branch manager of the M.R. Dye Library in Horn Lake, MS for two years. She left the public library field to become a school librarian and served at Sacred Heart School in Walls, MS for one year before eventually moving closer to home to serve as the librarian at Hernando Elementary School for 2.5 years. At this time, Mrs. Harris took a hiatus to pursue and complete a master's degree. She then began her career with Memphis City Schools at Westwood Elementary School where she served for 7.5 years, moved to Westwood High School for six years; Manassas High School for two years; Houston High School for one year; and Ridgeway High School where she is currently serving in her eleventh year as librarian.
Mrs. Harris has written and received over $20,000 in grants throughout her career. She has served on numerous committees, including serving as the chairperson of SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools), and serving as a SIP (School Improvement Plan) committee chair. In 2012, she received the Tennessee Association of School Librarians Innovative Librarian Award. She is a member of the United Education Association, the Tennessee Education Association, the National Education Association, and the Tennessee Association of School Librarians. Mrs. Harris participates in edWeb, an online professional learning community, and she is a former reviewer of books for School Library Journal. Now in her 31st year as a librarian, Mrs. Harris manages the school library, maintains the school's equipment inventory, and serves as on-site technical support.
Mrs. Harris has been married 36 years and has one son. She enjoys reading, playing with her young grandson, spending time with her husband, taking care of her elderly father, serving others in her church family, playing with her dogs, and living the country life.
