HISTORY: Germantown High School has a history of soccer excellence. The girls' soccer team has made 13 appearances in the State Tournament, winning it in 1994, 1999, & 2001, and finishing runner-up in 1987 & 1990. The 1992 team ranks 3rd in Tennessee history for goals scored in a single season. Recently, they were District 16 champs (2021) and runners-up (2022). Germantown alumna has also been regionally and nationally recognized. Cindy Parlow Cone (’95), Germantown’s GOAT, is a World Cup Champion, 2-time gold-medalist, 2-time Hermann Award winner, and NWSL Champion. She is currently No.8 on the USWNT all-time scoring list & was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2019.
BUILDING A PROGRAM: At Germantown High School we are building a soccer program on a tradition that has state championships and national-level players. We want it to be more than just a team. We want there to be a legacy and style of play passed down every year so we can become competitive with the best teams in the Memphis area again. We want new players to fit into a group that is competitive, where you will meet teammates that stay friends long after high school.
PARENT PERSPECTIVE: Contact Booster Club parent Jocelyn Wherry at LadyRedDevilSoccerGHS@gmail.com with any questions you may have about costs or team climate.
COACH JOHN HERSHBERGER:
PHONE: 901-619-0981
EMAIL: HERSHBERGERJR@SCSK12.ORG
Coach Hershberger was born near Munich, Germany, and has played soccer his whole life. In youth soccer, he played on teams that won 5 KYSA State Championships (Kentucky). Coach Hershberger attended Rhodes College, playing Varsity Intercollegiate Soccer on the NCAA Division III Lynx, and won a Tennessee U-21 Championship with the Survivors club team. Coach Hershberger holds an NSCAA National License and USSF National License. He has coached boys and girls for 30 years at Craigmont HS, Sheffield HS, Southwind HS, St. Agnes Academy, and several local club teams. Coach Hershberger has also completed all the coursework for an M.S. in Exercise Science.
COACH DOUG MYERS: Growing up in Memphis, Coach Myers played in the Memphis Futbol Club program (’77) under local coaching legend Richard Bute. He played for the Houston High School Mustangs (1991-1995), winning 2 Tennessee State Championships during his time there (’93 & ’94), when the team was the No.1 ranked high school soccer team in the country. Coach Myers has also coached with MFC and at Southwind HS.
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE: Our goal is for good players to improve every day, working toward excellence. But we also want to encourage inexperienced players to learn soccer. Our experience has taught us that, if a player is dedicated to learning and trying hard, they can become very good, even without much training to begin with. To help with learning to play at a high level, we track progress with data: times for running, number of juggles, etc. We teach weightlifting for soccer because strength training makes better players and prevents injury. We record games and analyze game films. These are all skills and habits that will help you be a better player now, prevent injury, and carry on with you playing in the future, whether in college or just for your own enjoyment.
OUR FACILITY: We have a practice area with full-sized goals on the GHS campus and practice fields adjacent to the campus at the Germantown Soccerplex. In season, we have exclusive use of the Auxiliary Gym with futsal goals, to train indoors when the weather prevents outdoor training. GHS also has 2 weight rooms, where players will learn to lift the correct way.
WE HAVE VEO: The Veo soccer camera has multiple lenses and records the entire field from a tripod 25’ high. The video is then uploaded and processed using soccer-specific software that tracks the ball. You will be able to see highlights of yourself playing and share the game or clips of it with parents and family. But, if you want to play at a higher level—in college, or beyond, you will also have game film to send to coaches and recruiters. See more about Veo on Youtube at: https://youtu.be/fTpPSsvMKRM 2022-23 Germantown Girls Soccer, District 16 Runner-up
