The rich history of Germantown High began in 1879 in the Masonic Hall, located on Germantown Road South. After several moves, the lot at 7653 Old Poplar Pike was purchased and a five-classroom building with a study hall was erected. Classes began at this location in 1911. The original name was Mabel C. Williams High School in honor of the superintendent. We have grown over time from a small schoolhouse to a thriving campus of ten buildings on twenty-two acres.
Germantown High School is now one of the most acclaimed and diverse large high schools in Tennessee and has been recognized nationally and internationally for its achievements in academics, athletics, and the arts. GHS challenges students to succeed academically and in an exhaustive cross-section of extracurricular areas. Germantown High School has sustained a rich legacy of excellence while fostering an environment in which all children from all socio-economic backgrounds and experiences can find success and a place of support. In 1966, Germantown High was named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education and was authorized as an International Baccalaureate World School in 2008.
