    • April 2022 FIRE SAFETY EDUCATIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT #4

Good morning students and staff of __ White Station High School__. The April 2022 monthly fire safety activity will not require us to evacuate the building. We will hear our final Fire Safety Educational Announcement for the 2021-22 school year. Please let me have your “undivided attention “as we read this important fire safety information:

      Fire safety starts in school

School fire drills are a model for students to use in their homes. Memphis Shelby County School students have a responsibility to use the Fire Safety Tips you learn at school to prepare the residents of your home in the event of a residential fire. Please encourage your parents, guardians, and siblings to practice home fire drills.

In a home fire, you may have less than two minutes to escape. Make sure everyone in your family is prepared for a home fire. Know where to go. Create an exit plan from every room of the house to evacuate family members safely. Know how to get out of every room of your home at least two ways.

      • If the house is full of smoke, “get low on all four” hands and knees and crawl to the nearest exit. If your clothing catches fire, “stop, drop, cover your face, and roll”
      • Get to a designated safety spot in front of your home and a safe distance away. Call 911 and keep everyone close until firefighters arrive

DO NOT RE-ENTER THE HOUSE WHILE IT IS ON FIRE

      A picture containing text

Description automatically generatedInstall and maintain smoke detectors throughout your home. Working smoke detectors are your first line of defense and greatly increase chances of survival. The National Fire Protection Association reports that nearly three in five fire deaths result from home fires with no smoke alarms (or working smoke alarms). Put smoke alarms in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area. Each level of the house should have an alarm.

      • Test smoke detectors at least once a month to ensure the batteries still work. Replace batteries once or twice a year. The nearest Fire Station will provide your home with “free”, working smoke detectors if needed
      • Ask your parents or guardians to inspect the pilot lights, ventilator openings, attics, and fire-prevention systems in the home on a regular basis

Description automatically generatedCooking fires are the top cause of home fires and home injuries, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Meanwhile, heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths. Electricity, smoking, and candles pose their share of fire hazards, too. Fortunately, you can take simple steps to reduce the risks:

      • Stay with your food when you cook. A fire is most likely to occur when the stove is unattended

      • Use the back burners of stoves so children can’t accidentally knock over pots or grab something hot
      • Keep the stovetop and oven clean to prevent grease buildup that feed a fire
      • Don’t leave dishtowels hanging on the oven door
      • Keep candles and other sources of open flames out of reach of children and away from anything flammable. If possible, opt for flameless candles
      • Keep curling and clothes irons out of reach of children, and away from ledges, electrical wiring, and flammable materials

      • Keep dryer exhausts well-ventilated and free of flammable buildup by cleaning them regularly

      • Keep fire extinguishers in common areas like the kitchen, near the fireplace, and near other sources of heat

Remember, practice makes perfect! Practice reduces panic and injuries

Thanks so much for your attention
