Exploratory Art Update
6th Grade
Hello students and parents/guardians!
Words cannot express how much I miss my students and us being in class together! I hope you are all doing well during these difficult times filled with uncertainty. I also hope that you and your families stay healthy and safe. I know the children are dealing with a lot of emotions, as we all are, but we will get through this.
To continue some artistic learning, I set up Google Classroom for my classes so my students can have a creative outlet for all the things they may be feeling. Each week I will post an activity, skill practice, resource or task that they can participate in. Of course, these activities are for enrichment purposes only. Their first activity begins next week. Please have your child login to the Google Classroom page. Students can also download the Google Classroom app onto a phone or tablet if that method is preferred.

Orchestra Update CAPA II and CAPA III
CAPA IIHey Everyone,A few things:1) I hope that you are doing okay. My desire is that you all know that I giving you all these assignments to encourage you and keep your skills up, not to push or overwhelm you. Life can be very stressful and crazy so please do whatever it takes to give yourself some peace. Music helps me find purpose and feel calm, so I am providing this for all who are interested.2) When I set the deadline for Friday, I wasn't thinking about how tomorrow is Good Friday. I have no idea where my mind was (other than time table). Please take your time in turning your "assignments" in. Family time and personal belief time should take priority. Please forgive my thoughtlessness! This goes along with 3 below.3) Since--as of today--Shelby County Schools is not using Zoom anymore, I am trying out Teams on Microsoft (through the kid's school account info). I believe this will be the most secure and the easiest way to communicate to students. This is the Microsoft equivalent of google classroom, but with more capabilities I believe. I am still learning how to navigate this platform, it is not as straightforward as zoom. I am attaching the link below so that your child can check it out. I know that we scheduled our next online class meeting for Monday 4/13 at 12:30, but because of Easter weekend and this new platform, I am going to need to take a little more time to figure this out before our next meeting. Let's tentatively plan for Wednesday April 22 at 12:30. At your earliest convenience, please click the link below and let me know if your child is able to get in. If this is not going to work, then I will need to try and set something else up!Please let me know what I can do to help you! If you are wanting more, I will give feedback to your videos as soon as I am able when you e-mail assignments and then provide your next steps, or your next personalized "assignment." If you can't handle it right now, take some time and try again when you feel ready. I know that chasing two kids under 5 around and managing their emotions when they don't get to see the people they love and go the places that they love is very taxing. I can give more some days and some weeks than others. I will give you my best, but just like you are aware, our family and well-being come first. I genuinely hope you understand these assignments are out of love and encouragement. If these assignments and tasks aren't helping and you need something alternative to help, PLEASE let me know!I miss your children so much! I replay the audio from concert festival over and over and I am so proud and happy we were able to have such wonderful success the day before all of this happened!I love you all-CAPA IIIHey Everyone,A few things:1) I hope that you are doing okay. CAPA Art Update and Practice Activities#3
Good Morning CAPA Art Families,I hope this email finds your families safe and well. SCS has communicated that the third quarter grades will be closed out this week. Please check you child's grades for my class on Powerschool. Due to the uncertain times, I was very generous with grading since we are not in school to allow for makeup work. The 3 points for honors credit have been added. If you have any questions about your child's grade, please contact me and I will respond individually.New unit for this week...Please see the attached powerpoint pdf file for instructions for the next art unit. I thought it would be nice for CAPA Art students to use their skills and talents to create artwork to uplift our community. I would love for the students' art to be shown on Colonial's social media pages to inspire and comfort others.Take care and feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.Thanks,J. Shiberou -
CAPA Art Update and Practice Activities#2
Good Morning Parents and Students,I wanted to clarify that all assignments I sent home, as well as the lessons I am preparing are suggested activities. Per SCS policy, no grading can be done while we are out. This is to make sure that our practices are fair for all students. I will still be preparing lessons for your students so they can stay engaged, but it will be optional, not mandatory. You are free to email me a pic of the work your student is creating, and I will give them feedback on what they did well, and what they need to improve, but I will not be assigning a grade. The suggested activities for this week and next will continue to be the projects were were working on in class before school let out. I will prepare a unit of instruction to keep them engaged after next week. I am looking into setting up a google classroom to view one another's work, and I will continue staying in touch. Thanks for your understanding as we learn to navigate these uncharted times.J. CAPA Art Update and Practice Activities
Good Morning CAPA Art families and students,
I hope that you and your families are safe and well. This is a difficult time for all of us, so it is important to stay connected and support one another. I will be continuing my weekly emails to you, and you are also free to reach out with any questions or concerns. I hate that I am missing out on classroom instruction time with my students, as I genuinely love teaching and interacting with them!Congratulations are in order for 8th grade CAPA Art student Aniya Scales. Her drawing, “Prayer,” previously won a Gold Key in the Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards, but it has now won a Gold Key at the national level!! This is a huge accomplishment!!Assignment for the week:Before we left, I sent home the current projects we were working on. If your child was out for a field trip, he/she may restart in their sketchbook or on a sheet of copy paper. Students may take 2 weeks to complete these assignments. I will prepare a new units of instruction for them to complete as the semester progresses.6th grade: Complete your Memphis in May poster on Ghana. Color shade or shade using whatever materials you have at home. Memphis in May has been rescheduled for October, so there is still an opportunity to enter these!7th grade: Complete your Surrealistic Perspective Project. Color shade or shade in your choice of materials. If you need help, check out the Virtual Instructor. This is an art instruction site that has videos and helpful guides.8th grade: Complete a concentration. Each student has selected an artistic investigation based on a question. The work should be related in style to your previous concentration. (Students have been taught this info, and have seen lots of examples). This is to prepare them for Advanced Placement Art in high school. You can find lots of resources online as well.Have a safe week!J. Shiberou -

Orchestra Update and Practice Activities
Good Evening Everyone,
Thank you to those of you who responded so quickly in regards to your desires to use an internet platform to communicate and learn. I wanted to update you on how I am going to proceed and help those of you who are interested in progressing in Orchestra during this time. I would still like to do a Zoom (or another platform) session eventually. However, I think if we started playing on an online orchestra immediately, without direction beforehand, this might be a huge mess and waste of time and energy for everyone. Therefore, I am going to break this down into assignments before we try to start an online orchestra. If you are going faster than the assignment, please show me where you are at! I want to be pushed to your individual level! I am trying to give you enough push without you getting overwhelmed. I am here for your individual need!
I know that not everyone is going to be participating in sending in videos of individual practice or keeping up with our practice schedule, but for those of you who are interested, I would like to eventually record us playing a song online as a virtual orchestra. Your practice videos are evidence that you are wanting to participate in this orchestra experience. I want to be clear: we cannot make assignments during this time. This is not for a grade, this is merely for your enjoyment and to push you further as a musician.
While you all are in the process of practicing, I will be figuring out how to make that work, because I have been seeing it happen (mostly on zoom)!
Once you all are showing me you are practicing, I will start working on some strum bowing lessons where we learn how to play our instruments in a guitar fashion. This is one of my childhood heroes and one of my instructors while I was in college at Belmont University in Nashville. He is the one who taught me how to strum bow. You don’t have to watch the whole video, but I just wanted to show you that the way in which you play your instrument can make it sound less like “classical music” and more like the styles you would like to play. He likes rock and jazz. You could apply these to the styles you prefer.
https://youtu.be/Z9x738fFmmcI am going to break these assignments up into 1) A piece to work on 2)Scales to practice so you don’t get too rusty 3) An exercise to work on to get you to the next level.
For these first recordings, please send in to me by Tuesday, March 31. This will help me know how to pace these lessons out or if I need to switch music.
I hope you all know that I am here for you! I do have two VERY tiny children that demand 98% of my focus, but most evenings, and some days where they both nap, I have the ability to go through e-mails and give feedback! Please don’t hesitate to ask questions and send multiple videos to check and see how you are doing!
CAPA III- Agincourt 1-14 (Record)- Focus on rhythm, intonation, tone, articulations, and dynamics. If you are confused, write out the rhythms under the notes so I can see if you understand. If you have the rhythms correct, send me a video (or audio) of you counting and clapping the rhythms. Then you can play from there.
