Extended Learning Makes a Difference
Willow Oaks Elementary's Extended Learning Opportunities and Programs have been implemented to keep students safe and academically engaged with socially enriching activities, while giving their parents peace of mind during the before and after school hours.
ELOP is an extension of the regular school day, in which emphasis is placed on student achievement through challenging, fun, stimulating activities and developmentally appropriate practices. These practices are carried out by highly qualified, trained, professional site staff members. Before Care: 6:00 AM - 8:00 AM
After Care: 3:15 PM - 5:30PM
ELOP Supervisor: Yolanda Crumb @crumbyc@scsk12.org
Why this work is so important:
According to recent data, there are approximately 10.2 million school-age children in afterschool programs (Afterschool Alliance 2014). This includes 1.6 million kids who attend 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC). These programs serve children living in high-poverty areas and who attend low-performing schools. At a time when families and communities are struggling financially and kids are falling behind academically and socially, quality afterschool programs are needed more than ever.
Extended Learning Time (ELT) is a school reform effort that seeks to improve student achievement by increasing the length of the traditional school year by adding hours to the school day or days to the school year.
The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) defines ELT as: increasing the length of the school day, week, or year to significantly increase the total number of school hours so as to include additional time for instruction in core academic subjects, enrichment activities, planning time, and professional development for educators.
Students in high-quality afterschool programs have better attendance, behavior, grades and test scores compared to their non-participating peers. (Afterschool Alliance, 2016)
Three out of four parents agree that afterschool programs give them peace of mind about their children when they are at work. (Afterschool Alliance, 2016)
Afterschool programs provide safety and supervision, while linking kids with mentors who discourage negative behaviors, such as aggression and drug and alcohol use. For every dollar invested in afterschool programs, $2.50 is saved in crime-related costs. (Afterschool Alliance, 2016)
Over 30 years, the academic achievement gap between students from lower and high-income families has grown by 40%. (Afterschool Alliance, 2016)
Consistent participation in quality afterschool programs is linked to significant gains in student test scores and work habits. Afterschool programs not only have a positive effect on students at risk of failure, but help reduce the math achievement gap between students from lower and high-income families. (Afterschool Alliance, 2016)
Extended Learning Opportunities and Programs are dedicated to providing exceptional student support services aligned with all five (5) priorities of Shelby County Schools' Destination 2025 .
