Text: Heinrichs, Jay – How to Argue with a Cat 

Assignments: Directions: After you read all the text, you will complete the following assignments: 

1. You should have at least two annotations per chapter. All annotations for the books must be done in a dialectical journal. Detailed information about how this should look can be found at Dialectical Journal Summer Assignment   

2. After reading the book and completing annotations, find three newspaper or magazine articles (long form commentary or editorial, not just news) about an issue of major importance in the state, country, or world. Copy and annotate them. 

3. After carefully reading and annotating all sources, write a two paragraph “Current Events Journal” following the information here CEJ Instructions.  For this version of the assignment, you should focus your commentary explaining how the techniques Heinrichs discusses in the book are used by the author to convey his or her opinion or develop their thesis. 4. 5. Dialectical Journal annotations for both the book and articles and the three current events journals should be submitted on the first day of class. Electronic submissions to the email above is preferred but paper copies are accepted.
