Medical District High's four-year academic framework incorporates courses designed to provide students with access to Early Postsecondary Opportunities (EPSOs).
EPSOs are specialized educational programs that enable high school students to acquire college credits or develop advanced skills before their high school graduation. These initiatives offer students an advantageous start in their postsecondary education and career trajectories. Notable examples of EPSOs include Advanced Placement (AP) courses, International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, dual enrollment in college classes, career and technical education (CTE) certifications, and early college high schools. Engaging in these programs allows students to minimize the duration and expense associated with obtaining a postsecondary degree or credential, enhance their preparedness for college and careers, and investigate academic and professional interests within a nurturing environment.
Currently, students at Medical District can earn EPSOs in two ways:
- Industry Credential: An industry credential (IC) certifies that a student developed specialized knowledge and skills in a specific career area and passed a nationally recognized exam.
- Computer Science Foundation Course (9th Grade)
- CompTIA A+ Certification: Focuses on foundational IT skills, hardware, networking, and security basics, and is often considered an entry-level certificate for IT professionals.
- Dual Enrollment: Dual Enrollment, a partnership with Southwest Tennessee Community College to offer college courses to Medical District High students, allows students to work towards an associate’s degree while enrolled in high school.
