Whole Group/Carpet Area

Whole group instruction allows teachers to connect with all learners at once and creates an opportunity for children to learn new concepts while also supporting one another. To create an effective whole group area in a preschool setting, it is essential to consider children's developmental stages. Since young children are still learning to develop their self-regulation skills, whole group time should be no more than 15-20 minutes in length. Teachers should utilize visuals and other displays to boost daily engagement and create predictable routines that promote literacy-rich conversations. While introducing a concept, teachers should encourage student dialogue rather than teacher monologue. Be responsive to students' interests and needs to increase active participation.
