Dramatic Play Interest Area
-
The Dramatic Play interest area is a very popular and essential part of an effective preschool classroom. Familiar materials in this center keep children actively engaged while they express their knowledge about the world alongside their peers. This area should be placed in the noisy area of the classroom, with ample amount of space for children to freely move around and play. The dramatic play area should include a variety of developmentally and culturally appropriate materials, equipment, and props to encourage creative expression and imagination. It is important to provide an adequate number of materials for children to mimic stories and different roles that they may encounter in everyday life. However, including an overabundance of materials may result in a lack of suitable space for play. Teachers should intentionally prepare this area based on current curriculum concepts throughout the school year. When providing students with real-life materials, be mindful of safety. If the label on the package says, "keep out of reach of children," then that item should not be placed in the classroom. This includes items such as empty medicine bottles, cleaning supplies, etc. The dramatic play area is a Creative Curriculum and ECERS-3 required area.
